Manoj Basnyat is a specialist in the world of development planning and management with more than 25 years of experience. By incorporating a variety of sustainable development solutions, he is able to lead and execute a positive change in the lives of those around him. He is also the recipient of countless awards at both national and local levels. He began his education at the Krasnodar Polytechnical Institute (now known as Kuban State Technological University) where he earned his master of science degree with a focus on architecture and planning. He next attended Universitaet Dortmund to receive his post-graduate Diploma in Regional Development Planning and Management. Manoj earned his master of science degree at the Asian Institute of Technology and Universitaet Dortmund, specializing in Regional Development Planning and Management. Furthering his schooling, his executive education at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University was focused on leaders in development.

Manoj Basnyat is currently the Special Advisor to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Prior to this, he served as the Senior Adviser and Coordinator of the Sustainable Development Goals Team (SDG) in the Office of the President of the United Nations General Assembly 71 st Session. He became known for his consistent leadership skills during the push to implement all 17 sustainable development goals, with a focus on goals to end poverty and hunger, two topics close to his heart.
Before he held this position, Manoj was the Special Adviser in the Bureau of Management of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). While in that role, he helped to establish several people-centered performance management and development arrangements, all with a focus on developing world-class capabilities. He also spearheaded the movement to ensure that UNDP’s technical assistance and resources behaved more efficiently. He has also served as UNDP’s Resident Representative, a.i for extended periods in both Ukraine and Afghanistan. As the Country Director of UNDP in Afghanistan and Bangladesh, Manoj was responsible for planning, managing and delivering development assistance in conjunction with multiple stakeholders in the international and national community. Through his leadership, including in building partnerships, mobilizing resources and finding responsive development solutions, development assistance became the largest and most effective. As Country Director, he was managing development assistance, which became 25% and larger of the organization’s global resources, at the size of or larger than UNDP’s regional bureaus.
Manoj was the Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP in Ukraine for a number of years and assisted in the delivery of development assistance as its Country Programme Director. Through his excellent leadership and management skills, the organization substantially increased their productivity and were able to increase the delivery of UNDP’s assistance about 400 – 500%. Manoj Basnyat has received numerous accolades throughout his extensive career. He was recognized in 2012 with the David Lock Award by UNDP’s Regional Bureau for Asia and Pacific for his dedication, professionalism, and Results in Afghanistan. In 2012, UNDP’s Administrator awarded him the UNDP’s Diversity Award for his leadership in human resources management. In 2011, Manoj’s leadership of UNDP’s Country Office was recognized with the Julia Taft Award by the US Committee for UNDP for outstanding work in Afghanistan. Manoj has been frequently recognized for being an effective leader and manager of development work, such as the establishment of the Regional Center for the Asia Pacific in Colombo.
